One marker of a good song is that it remains a good song no matter who is singing it. One marker of a great artist is taking a song already made famous by someone else and remaking it with their own flair to be something new, fresh, and interesting. I mean, Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade” took on a new life due to the supergroup pairing of Lil’ Kim, P!nk, Mya, and Christina Aguilera. JoJo proved she could sing with the best of ‘em after covering SWV’s “Weak.” And perhaps the greatest cover of all time, “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, becomes a different beast entirely from the Otis Redding original.
